THE INFINITELY AND INSTANTLY VARIABLE TREE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Wellep Headplate and Tree 01Wellep Headplate and Tree 02

INTRODUCTION

The Wellep I.V. System - I.V. stands for instantly and infinitely variable

The Wellep System is built around the traditional laminated beech wood tree or the more modern composite tree. There, however, the similarity with traditional and conventional styles of trees ends. When built into a saddle there is no visual difference, thus maintaining all the qualities of the classical English saddle, but there is a total practical and functional difference both to horse and rider in feel, comfort, fitting and closeness of contact.

The 21st century features which have been incorporated into the Wellep System make all other tree designs obsolete. This is because if a saddle does not fit the horse all of the time, which until now has been the case, it is useless and, since, up until now saddles have only been variations based on a theme of compromise. None have done their job properly all of the time, the objective of a well designed tree and subsequently the saddle, in order to give comfort to the horse, value to the owner and ultimately to further good horsemanship and management.

The Wellep I.V. Spring Tree System differs from other trees in three distinct ways:

  • When the Wellep System with its unique and world-wide patented headplate is incorporated into a tree it will allow the saddle to fit and accommodate virtually any horse, due to its infinitely and instantly variable adjustment facility. Not only extra narrow and extra wide but the whole range of sizes between these two extremes.
  • The tension of the two springs, which go to make up a spring tree, can in the case of The Wellep Spring Tree System be increased or decreased depending upon the weight of the rider thereby always maintaining the correct degree of flexion which is most beneficial to both horse and rider. This adjustable tensioning system is another patented first. This feature may not be available in all models of saddles that are fitted with The Wellep I.V. System.

Both these means of adjustment can be instantly carried out by anyone in the field and are achieved simply and in moments, without fuss.

  • The Headplate of the Wellep System is made from a casting and in stainless steel, unlike all other existing gullet plates which are prefabricated from plain steel pressings. The benefit of a casting is a virtually twist free, totally rigid and perfectly symmetrical tree, qualities impossible to achieve in the past. Also, due to the choice of material used, the presence of rusting, inside the saddle, is much reduced. These two patented features are further exclusive firsts in tree and saddle design and construction.

THE ANATOMICALLY FITTING SADDLE

Until the introduction of the Wellep System the saddlery trade had relied on cosmetics and gimmickry in order to sell and promote saddles, without addressing themselves to or understanding the true needs and problems of the basis, on which all saddles are constructed, the tree. If they had they would have paid more attention to this fundamental. Altering the colour and type of material, in itself, can not logically or correctly be called a new or original design.

The brief to the manufacturers of the Wellep System was short, simple and to the point. Design and construct a tree that:

  • Fitted all horses all of the time, perfectly and comfortably.
  • Was right for the rider and did not alter or hinder the correct riding position but would enhance the riders seat.
  • When incorporated into the English saddle did nothing to alter or change a classic, time honoured and proven product, but merely updated its weak point. Its inability to maintain a constant fit with the horse.

BUILT IN SAFEGUARDS

The Wellep I.V. System features three built in safeguards to prevent damage occurring due to misuse and ensuring a stable and maintenance free product.

  • The key has been designed to flex as soon as the predetermined load has been reached in order to safeguard the mechanism from any unnecessary strain or force.
  • The mechanism has been designed so that it is impossible to either tighten or loosen the system to the point where it would be in danger.
  • Anti-vibration. The design of the product has made it impossible for the adjustment screw, once set with the key, to vary through vibration. The key is the only way the Wellep System can be adjusted.

Under no circumstances should anything other than the key provided be used to make the adjustment of the system.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

The Wellep I.V. System needs no maintenance except to say that it should be remembered that the Headplate and Tree are pieces of precision engineering and are the core of the saddle and as such should be treated with respect.

The saddle, like any other leather saddle, should be cleaned thoroughly after use with a sponge and cold/warm water, after which the leather should be protected by a good quality glycerine soap. When new it is advisable to apply to the under side of the leather of the saddle a leather dressing liquid. This will help to waterproof and soften the leather. This should be carried out at periodic intervals. If this procedure is carried out when the saddle is new and before it has come in contact with the elements it will help prevent water and damp from ever entering the leather. Never attempt to dry a wet saddle by artificial means, i.e. in front of an open fire or blow heater. Always allow the leather to dry naturally in a well ventilated room. After cleaning, store the saddle on a purpose made saddle rack, as this will keep the saddle ventilated and help to maintain its shape. If the saddle has to be placed on the ground ensure that it is stood with the pommel to the ground and the cantle resting against something secure, taking care to protect the leather at the pommel and cantle areas.
